SK Hynix closes the gap with Samsung Electronics in the DRAM market
SK Hynix is the only DRAM manufacturer to report an increase in sales in the fourth quarter of 2021 amid declining global semiconductor DRAM sales.
Global DRAM sales in the fourth quarter of 2021 were $25.3 billion (about 30 trillion won), down 6% from the previous quarter, the research firm of TrendForce market.
TrendForce blamed the drop in sales on component shortages at smartphone, server and PC makers, and a drop in DRAM prices resulting from an expansion in DRAM inventories.
Samsung Electronics ranked first in Q4 DRAM market share with 42.3%. The chipmaker maintained its No. 1 position, but its market share fell 1.7 percentage points from 44.0% in the third quarter as sales fell 9.4% during same period.
SK Hynix is the only global DRAM producer to have seen an increase in sales. Second-placed SK Hynix posted a market share of 29.7%, up 2.5 percentage points from 27.2% in the period. As a result, SK Hynix narrowed its gap with Samsung Electronics to 12.6 percentage points from 16.8 percentage points. As SK Hynix’s market share increased, the DRAM market share of Korean companies fell from 71.2% to 72.0%.
Third-placed Micron Technology posted a market share of 22.3%, down 0.6 percentage points from the previous quarter. Its sales fell 8.3% to $5,587 million over the same period.
While DRAM shipments declined in the fourth quarter of 2021, total DRAM production fell 5.8% from the third quarter to $25.3 billion.
