More medical marijuana dispensaries coming in 2022
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Hundreds of companies are looking to open medical marijuana dispensaries in Ohio.
A list of those who applied for dispensary licenses recently released by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy shows that there are 20 times as many applicants as there are licenses available.
“It certainly doesn’t surprise me. I know there is a huge demand for this. I think it could explode completely in this area, ”said Heather Bigler.
The Dublin resident started using medical marijuana two years ago, after several years of other treatments for pain and mental health issues related to a car accident in 2015.
“In fact, I overturned my car four times and was thrown. So [with] all my bodily injuries plus PTSD I was able to get my card, ”she explained. “Before, I had to rely quite heavily on physiotherapy, opiates, Tylenol, ibuprofen. When you have marijuana, you don’t really have to rely on prescription drugs anymore. “
Bigler believes medical marijuana is becoming less taboo and has said his medical team is supporting the treatment.
The number of interested dispensary applicants also suggests the industry is taking off in Ohio. Due to increasing patient demand, the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program more than plans to double the number of dispensaries in the state from 57 to 130. 1,462 entities have applied for the 73 new licenses available. .
Franklin County will add nine new dispensaries to the six existing ones. 120 candidates are vying for licenses.
Bigler, who currently lives within a driving distance of 3 dispensaries, hopes that growing demand from patients and applicants will help improve accessibility and convenience.
“To be able to go to [a dispensary], kind of like if you could go to a gas station or a drugstore, that would be amazing, ”she said.
In January, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy will begin verifying applications and then put all eligible applicants into a lottery for each district to determine who will receive a license.
