The tech giant said its reconstructed production building at LG Smart Park in Changwon, 400 kilometers south of Seoul, had started initial operations.
LG earlier announced that it would invest a total of 800 billion won ($ 683 million) to upgrade its Changwon 1 plant into a smart, environmentally friendly facility. He spent 480 billion won to carry out the first phase of the plan.
The upgrade focuses on bringing the production lines of each building together under one roof. It first installed three production lines of refrigerators and water purifiers in the reconstructed building.
LG plans to set up three more kitchen appliance manufacturing lines inside its new building and establish a renovated warehouse by 2024.
The upgraded facility benefits from improved automation in all production processes, from assembly to packaging, and leverages big data and deep learning technologies for improved efficiency and product quality , according to LG.
To improve productivity, LG said it has also beefed up its logistics system with automated guided vehicles powered by 5G and an intelligent parts delivery system.
When the full upgrade of its Changwon 1 plant is complete, LG said the plant’s annual production capacity will increase from 2 million units to 3 million units. In addition, with the advanced system, LG expects a 30% improvement in energy efficiency.
LG has announced its intention to apply the intelligent production system to foreign factories by comparing the intelligent solutions used in the Changwon factory. The company added that upgrades to its smart factory would also benefit partner companies and create more jobs. (Yonhap)
