DENVER, COLORADO, USA, November 19, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ – A new study of the best-selling children’s electronics on Amazon has found that millions of uncertified and non-compliant children’s electronics are entering each year in homes. The study, conducted by family-owned tech company COSMO Technologies, examined 250 top-selling children’s electronics products on the e-commerce platform, finding 50% without any evidence of required safety certifications and several products in direct violation. regulations on the privacy of children’s online data.
COSMO Technologies’ first annual Buyer Beware report highlights the growing problem of unsafe products for children invading e-commerce platforms like Amazon, thanks to the explosive growth of third-party sellers. While Amazon’s policies claim to require and guarantee the safety of all children’s products sold on its platform, this study is the latest in a growing body of evidence highlighting the pervasive dangers that exist across the world. world market.
“It’s a growing problem for parents and families,” says Russell York, founder and CEO of COSMO Technologies. “Consumers need to know the dangers of shopping on these platforms and know how to spot quality products and companies that have made the safety of children and families a priority. “
The report, released ahead of what is expected to be a record-breaking holiday online shopping season, revealed the following:
– 50% of the products reviewed had no claims or evidence of required certifications or safety tests.
– 47% of products reviewed were from sellers without a website, terms and conditions, privacy policies, etc.
– 44% of products reviewed carrying the Amazon’s Choice seal had no evidence of safety or compliance certification.
– 3 products reviewed were in direct violation of federal COPPA (Child Online Privacy Protection Act) regulations.
COSMO has reached out to Amazon to comment on these findings and to ask how the platform plans to ensure compliance and the safety of children and families on its platform going forward. An Amazon spokesperson initially responded, but ultimately declined to comment before the report was released.
Today, Amazon ships around 1.6 million packages per day, 56% of which are from third-party sellers. Amazon’s growth as a platform has brought both unprecedented ease of access to goods, as well as a whole new world of dangers for consumers.
A 2019 Wall Street Journal investigation report found 4,152 items for sale on Amazon’s platform that federal agencies had specifically declared unsafe, misleadingly labeled, or banned by federal regulators.
COSMO’s report also provides consumers with a four-step process to identify products that are safe for families and children. This includes steps to identify the type of device, research the company behind the product / list, and a user-friendly summary of how to find the right security tests and certifications.
“Unfortunately, this is the Wild West for consumers when it comes to children’s electronics on Amazon,” says Michelle Ross, co-founder and COO of COSMO. “As we call on Amazon to do more to keep children safe, we are also working to empower consumers to make the best choices.”
